Training Essentials for Running

he first thing that you might want to consider before you start running is “Why do I want to run?” The reasons why people run vary. Some may run because they want to lose weight, while others may run because they want to maintain a healthy body, while still others may want to run to compete in run events such as 10K’s or marathons. Whatever the reasons to start running, here are some basics tips that you should know.

Train Smart – Listen to Your Body

Any person who runs, will eventually be interested in taking part in running related events such as marathons or various other fun runs such as a 3 km run, a 5 km or even a 10 km. It is true that different people have different reasons for competing in these events, but whatever the reasons may be there are some guidelines that need to be followed when it comes to training and running for such events.

The secret to smart training is being aware of what your body tells you. Most experienced coaches understand that a runner’s success is based on simply persevering; carrying on even when the only thing driving you is motivation. It’s mind over matter. This does not come easy, one needs to be patient and train regularly so that they can master the skill of running.

Important Aspects of Running

What many people don’t understand is that when you push your body to go too fast too soon, your body will give in, which could result in you throwing in the towel and never running again. Running fast may be exhilarating and fun, but it may also result in injuries. To avoid burn outs, you need to give your body some downtime. Slow down until you feel that your body is charged up again. To run effectively, a runner needs to start off slowly, get a feel as to what his body is capable of and then decide on the distance he/she feels they can run.

As a runner, you will want to set some goals about the distance that you want to run and gradually build your mileage. The desirable increase in mileage is ten percent a week.

You may want to consider to first start your training in a gym using a treadmill. The reason a trial run at the gym is effective is because you can record the distance you are capable of running and the time taken for you to run that distance, along with many other details including your heart rate and calories lost if you are interested in losing weight. Running on a treadmill will also allow you to jump off at any time that you have had enough.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to join a gym to use a treadmill. There are many home treadmills available on the market. There are even folding treadmills that can be stored away if you are short on space. Considering the price of many gym memberships, owning your own treadmill may be a better option.

Have a Training Plan

One of the funny things about running is that you cannot run without training, but you cannot train without running too.

If you are having trouble finding a good training plan, you may want to check online as there are many training plans available from how to start running all the way up to marathon training plans. However, having a training plan alone is also not enough, you will need to stick to this plan. You will have to set aside time to run until it actually becomes part of your weekly routine. Only then can you can steadily increase your distances.

Running Gear

The last and most important piece of advice is that when it comes to serious running you will need a pair of good running shoes that will protect your feet. Running shoes will be your most important purchase. Moisture wicking running apparel is also something that you will appreciate on warmer days. If you aren’t familiar with technical fabrics you should read some running apparel reviews first. You cannot run properly unless you are comfortable, and wearing comfortable running apparel will make your runs much more enjoyable.

For whatever reason you are choosing to begin running, you can see that there are certain considerations to keep in mind. Take it slowly, train properly and wear the correct running shoes and you will be sure to find a lot of joy in the sport of running.
