I just wanted to talk to you about the uniqueness of training with the kettlebell. I get an array of phone calls, emails, and just flat out personal encounters everyday from people who want to know what is so special about training with the kettlebell. I must say that the big question is “what is the big deal?” Obviously these folks have not had a proper training experience with the ancient iron bell.
As you may or may not know the uniqueness of the bell lies within it’s design. You see even when compared to the dumbbell the difference is that the dumbbell has a grip and design that fits firm and CLOSE into the palm of your hand. The difference with the kettlebell is that it’s design creates a large sense of awkwardness because the handle is extended away from the majority of the mass of the weight (or bell portion). This causes you to have to constantly fight against the kettlebell by keeping it close to your center of gravity. You see this thing pulls away from you constantly no matter how you try to hold it. So if you were wondering about what made it so special then this is your answer.
The other thing is that when you incorporate other more dynamic lifts such as the swings, overhead snatches, and Turkish get-ups you really utilize the awkwardness that I mentioned before in a much more intense way, thereby gaining full benefit from using this device. I have found that many people often wonder about what makes it so special when they have not experienced the use of the kettlebell. Anyone that tells you that you can get the same thing done with dumbbells is flat out wrong and I promise you they haven’t experienced this for themselves! I have worked with dumbbells a heck of a lot longer than I ever have with kettlebells and the kettlebell is much more effective with the real dynamic lifts such as snatches, cleans, and swings. I am not bashing other equipment such as dumbbells, but I am just merely saying that there are some things that are just better and more efficient with kettlebells. An easy explanation and comparison that I make with people when talking about the iron bell is that I say to picture the kettlebell as simply a tool in the tool chest of fitness. There are many other tools such as dumbbells, barbells, plates, and other equipment, but the kettlebell is simply the most valuable and versatile tool in the chest!
