At some level, you realise that your thoughts do indeed effect your body. You have experienced it on so many levels.
For example, when you hear a strange noise in the house at night, you immediately doubt your safety and this causes your breathing to become shallow and rapid…demonstrating the effect that thoughts have on your respiratory system.
But all of our systems are effected by our thoughts. Research reveals that when we are choosing positive thoughts the body is strengthened and when we are thinking negatively the body weakens.
However, most of our thoughts and beliefs are not conscious. We learned them in early childhood and because they are so much part of us we cannot even see them.
We are on auto pilot, regurgitating the beliefs of our parents and society. Unless we deliberately focus on changing them, we are often running out-dated programmes of our parents and grandparents who had their own fears about pregnancy and birth that are not relevant now.
Harnessing the Power of Your Mind in Pregnancy and Birth
- The first step is to become aware of what your thoughts and beliefs are about pregnancy and birth. Take a few blank pages and write one of the following headings Pregnancy, Birth, Motherhood, Our relationship on each.
- Focus on one at a time and just write whatever words, feelings, or thoughts come up for you on that topic. Don’t judge, just allow yourself to unload. This process alone will help reduce stress on the system and can be very revealing.
- While you may be very happy that you are pregnant, it is also possible that you have had thoughts like ‘babies can really change a relationship’, ‘birth is very difficult’ or ‘it is very hard to get your shape back after birth’. The brain is a goal reaching device. It hears these thoughts as orders and along with your subconscious mind does its best to make them a reality.
- But you can use this information to download new thoughts about what you really and truly want AND begin to focus most of your attention on these.
- This process is much easier with a coach who can clearly see the areas in which your thoughts and beliefs are preventing you from enjoying a safe, empowering pregnancy birth and a more fulfilling relationship with your partner at this time. However, you can begin the process of writing down what you really want and in doing this you are create new neural pathways in your brain.
- You can also attend a class that focuses specifically on harnessing the power of your mind and activating beliefs that really serve you in pregnancy and birth so that you can move forward with joy and confidence while feeling great about your body.
