Treadmill Workout Tips – 5 Tips For Your Treadmill Workouts

If running or walking on a treadmill is part of your normal exercise routine, are you getting the absolute most benefit from your workouts? Sadly, many people who use a treadmill use improper form or poor technique. As a result, they’re not improving their fitness level or reaching their overall health goals.

The good news is that most of these flaws are minor and can be corrected rather easily. Let’s examine our top five tips for getting the most value from your treadmill workouts…

#1: Are You Holding On?

Many times at your gym or health club, you’ll notice people on treadmills holding on to the front or side rails. In general, if you need to hold on the the rails, you’re not getting optimal benefit from your walking or running.

The reason is that by holding on, you’re not using your entire body weight to create momentum and propel you forward. It is much better to slow the pace or decrease the incline to develop proper hands free form. Additionally, holding on to the rails creates an irregular stride, which may ultimately cause injury to knees and ankles.

If you’re holding on to monitor your heart rate, a much better strategy is to take your heart rate during a recovery period in the workout, or using a clip on heart rate monitor.

#2: Challenge Is Good

Treadmill workouts can be boring, so it’s important to push yourself a bit. Vary your routine and incorporate incline workouts, interval sessions, and speed work. If your workouts are varied and interesting, you’ll push yourself more and achieve better long term results.

#3: It Must Be The Shoes

It’s very important to change your running shoes every few months. Even twice a year is fine. Your feet take a pounding during a treadmill workout, so make sure your shoes have ample padding. If your shoes get heavy use, change them 3 to 4 times a year. Your feet will thank you!

#4: Participate In Group Treadmill Classes

If you belong to a health club, seek out group treadmill classes. They are on the increase in popularity and most large gyms offer them. You’ll experience a blast of motivation from being around other like minded fitness enthusiasts, and the right instructor will make a positive difference in your enthusiasm and ultimate results.

#5: Keep That Water Handy

It’s well known that keeping hydrated during a workout is very important. In fact, by the time you’re thirsty, you are already in the early stages of dehydration. Keep a water bottle handy on or near your treadmill, and be sure to quench your thirst during recovery periods during the workout.

Following these five tips will help make your treadmill workouts more motivational, fun, and effective.
